Jamie Pugh, who was speaking exclusively to Wales On Sunday, has stated how he wanted to quit the show after he was called a liar. He even at one stage shaved off his beard so that he wouldn’t be recognised in the street.

Jamie overcame crippling stage fright to sing “Bring Him Home” from Les Miserables on Britain’s Got Talent. Before he sang, he told Simon Cowell that he’d never sung in front of a large audience. However, a video emerged of Jamie’s appearance in a 2006 West End talent show as part of a group which sang a medley of Rod Stewart songs.

Jamie told Wales on Sunday how the accusation battered his fragile confidence and it was only the support of his girlfriend Donna that prevented him quitting the shoe.

Jamie said: “If I didn’t have Donna, I would have quit. She’s my everything. That story in the paper really hurt. I bring my children up to be honest and it was blazed across that I was a liar.

“I’ve never hidden the fact I was on that show. What people have to understand is I wasn’t on my own. I’ve never walked onto a stage on my own.”

“My life is a struggle but I have everybody I want close to me. I’m the man I’ve always wanted to be. Every morning I wake up wanting to be a good man, good partner and good worker. I’m confident in everything else apart from my singing. It’s one of the few things that cripples me because I’m giving you everything I’ve got. It’s personal for me. With singing, it’s the one time I can give you everything I’ve got. When I sing I feel it.”

Jamie’s partner of the last seven years, Donna, said that Jamie had reacted badly to the criticism.

She revealed: “He takes all this to heart. Last week was atrocious, heartbreaking. We thought about locking the door and not letting anybody in but you can’t do that.

“It was a personal attack on him and he thought everybody hated him.

“I told him that no matter what happens, he’s still going to be my partner, he’s still going to be a dad and work starts tomorrow. It would have consumed him and made him feel so low.

“It could have got to the point where he wouldn’t have been able to get back up again. To sing he has to feel it and he wouldn’t be able to do that if he was depressed and not worth anything.”

Jamie said that he has been coping with the pressures by staying close to his family and friends whilst preparing for the next stage of the competition on May 23.

Jamie should take some comfort from the results of the poll on this website. In answer to the question:

Do you forgive Jamie his so-called fib?

42% of you replied that there was nothing to forgive, he didn’t fib. A further 40% said that yes, they forgave him, making a total of 82% of respondents who were still supporting him, including me!

So Jamie, we all wish you loads of luck for May 23rd!

She tells new!: “It was very hurtful. They made it sound like he had lied. He is no liar ….They said he has been in the West End for months, but he did one amateur thing. He didn’t have a contract and didn’t get paid. There was no way they could have paid him, anyway – it was appalling. I mean, I love him to death, but that was just awful!”

Bookmakers have rapidly revised their odds on Jamie Pugh winning Britain’s Got Talent after it emerged that he may have fibbed during his audition performance for the show.

Bookies are now said to be offering odds on the Welshman being booted off after it came to light that he has performed before an audience in a West End stage show.

Millions of viewers saw the 38-year-old tell Ant and Dec that he was “crippled with nerves” and also tell Simon Cowell that he had never sang before a large audience.

However, a report in The Sun has claimed that Jamie appeared in Star EFX Sunday Night Live, a showcase for new talent, at Her Majesty’s Theatre in London.

He sang a medley of Rod Stewart hits with a group of six others and apparently gave a solo performance of What A Wonderful World.

Bookmakers William Hill are now offering 7/1 odds on Pugh getting the boot.

Hill’s spokesman Rupert Adams said in a statement: “A large part of Jamie’s charm was based on his `chronic’ stage fright.

“Once you take that away he is fairly ordinary and you can see Simon Cowell taking a dim view.”

According to The DailyMail, Jamie has already performed on stage in front of a 1000 people in a west end show, despite saying he had never sung in front of an audience.

Some highlights from the article:
“Jamie appeared with a group of singers at Star EFX Sunday Night Live, a weekly showcase for new talent at Her Majesty’s Theatre, in London.”
“He is the stunningly talented pizza deliveryman set to rival Britain’s Got Talent’s Susan Boyle, despite crippling stage fright and the urge to run off stage.”
“But the contestant Jamie Pugh was apparently exposed as a liar last night, after it emerged he had already performed in the West End.”
“But last night he confessed to having entertained the West End, but denied misleading fans because he has never performed alone.”

Jamie Pugh lied to the judges on Britain’s Got Talent when he told them that he had never performed before a live audience, it has been claimed.

Before his rendition of ‘Bring Him Home’ from Les Miserables, judge Simon Cowell asked the pizza delivery man if he had ever sung in front of a crowd before, to which he replied “no”.

However, The Sun obtained video footage of Pugh singing a number of Rod Stewart songs as part of a group at Her Majesty’s West End theatre, as well as taking tentative lead vocals for a cover of Louis Armstrong’s ‘What A Wonderful World’.

Pugh told the newspaper: “I have previously performed as part of a group but I never sang alone. It didn’t go that well.”

An audience member at the 2006 show said: “I couldn’t believe it when I saw him on Britain’s Got Talent saying he had never performed in front of an audience before.”

Jamie Pugh has said that he nearly left the set of Britain’s Got Talent before he even began his audition.

The 38-year-old widowed pizza delivery man won three “Yes” votes from the judges after his performance of ‘Bring Him Home’ from Les Miserables on last weekend’s show.

Pugh told The Mirror: “I wanted to go home. I didn’t sleep for three days before and I’m now on 40 fags a day.

“This is going to sound really weird – I fear success but I don’t fear failure. I’ve failed at a lot of things and I fear success because I’m Jamie. I’ve got to appear on a TV show and I’m dreading it.”

He added: “I’m a wreck – I’m not a star.”

His 35-year-old partner Donna Davies said: “When Jamie wanted to walk out of the audition I threatened him with divorce – well not quite because we aren’t married. But I said, ‘You have to do it. Go for the ride and see what happens.’”

Move over Susan Boyle, Jamie Pugh stunned judges with his Les Miserables rendition

Saturday night saw Britain’s Got Talent head to Cardiff and one man waiting backstage was more nervous than most of the acts.

Jamie Pugh, a 37 year old warehouse worker and pizza delivery driver from Gwent, hadn’t slept in three nights and was worried his nerves might just prove too much.

As he explained, “I suffer from severe stage fright, it has totally crippled me, and I’ve come today to see if I can get through 3 minutes.”

Nerves can often affect the voice producing an uncontrolled sound that would certainly not impress the judges. Did Jamie get his nerves under control for long enough to impress?

Performing in front of the live audience and Judges is miles away from Jamie’s day to day job, “in the day time I work three days a week driving a van and in the evenings I deliver pizza. I’m just a simple bloke from the Valleys, but my dream is to sing at the Royal Variety in front of a live orchestra”. But Jamie’s biggest worry was walking out on stage and freezing, but with partner Donna watching on helplessly in the audience it was time to see if Jamie could finally conquer his stage fright.

Singing Bring Him Home from Les Miserables, Donna, his proud partner was up on her feet in the audience looking emotional as Jamie started his faultless and emotional performance.

All three judges looked spellbound and, at the end of the song, the whole theatre was on its feet, bringing tears and a look of shock to Jamie’s face, reminiscent of the scenes we saw when Susan Boyle performed.

The Judges gave their verdict: Amanda, “it is a beautiful song and that was amazing.” Piers added “I wasn’t expecting that kind of performance from you. You deliver pizzas at night for goodness sake and you come on this stage – one of the biggest talent shows in the world – and do a performance like that, I thought it was incredible.” And Simon added, “I think I just got how important the last three minutes of your life just were, and to get the reaction you just got from the audience must be unbelievable. It’s people like you, the reason why we come to Wales every year, I think you could be a special talent, but you have to start believing in yourself”

A shell-shocked and emotional Jamie walked off stage saying, “for this brief moment I feel complete”.
